Plaintiff English, a mechanic's helper, filed suit against his former employer and the drug testing company used in accordance with the employer's random testing program. English was dismissed after testing positive for marijuana in random drug screening. English charged that the test violated constitutional protections against unreasonable searches. He also claimed the drug testing company failed to follow federal guidelines.

This is the first judicial review of this case.

English loses. The U. S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama ruled that the test did not constitute an unreasonable search. The court ruled that the test complied with relevant federal guidelines.
