Issues:
Policy and procedure, 14
Case Summary:
Several applicants for employment with the Chicago Police Department appeal a lower court's ruling in their suit against the department. The applicants were rejected for employment after failing a psychological screening. The applicants filed suit, seeking access to related documents and an opportunity to appeal the department's decision. The applicants also petition to have the court certify for class. The city responded with a motion to dismiss.
Decision of lower jurisdiction:
A district court dismissed the case on the grounds that the rejected applicants might still find employment elsewhere. The applicants now appeal.
Outcome:
The applicants lose. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit affirmed the decision of the lower jurisdiction. The court rejected plaintiff's motion to certify class.
