Drug Testing in the Workplace
One of the most controversial subjects with regard to drugs is drug testing in the workplace. This is primarily because it is generally a huge privacy issue. Now your employer is legally allowed to use what you do during your time off to determine whether or not you should still have a job. While the case can definitely be made for people to stay clean while they’re on the job, people that shoot up, smoke, or drink while they’re at work are exceptionally rare. Most of the people who come up positive in drug tests are only using while they’re not at work – in which case, it shouldn’t even be an issue.

If you smoke marijuana during a week or even a few weeks that you’re off from work, you can come back and test positive – even though you’re completely sober while you’re at work. Another problem with drug testing in the workplace is that the way it’s done doesn’t take into account that most people are probably not drug users. Instead, it treats everybody as if they are potential drug users, and requires a drug test to prove that these people are innocent. Instead of being innocent until proven guilty, these drug tests assume that everybody is guilty first.
This can have some psychological effects on people who are forced to take these drug tests – especially if there is no reason for their employers to suspect that they are drug users. Also, when drug testing in the workplace can be used to discriminate against several different groups of people when they’re looking for a job, or when they’re simply working their own job. For example, in a lot of urine tests, it is relatively easy to see whether or not the person tested is pregnant. A lot of companies will fire pregnant workers because they don’t want to pay for the health insurance, or deal with maternal leave.
Some forms of illness can come up in urine tests as well, which means that those people are less likely to be able to get a job with health benefits. Many people choose to use synthetic urine when they take a drug test – this makes you test negative for drugs every time. Since most employers allow you to give your test sample discretely, one advantage of workplace drug testing is that it’s generally much easier to fake out the test than it is if you’re taking a drug test for the military or courts.
