Does CVS Drug Test

PUBLISHED: Sunday, May 7, 2023

CVS Health Corporation (CVS Health) owns CVS Pharmacy Inc. (CVS/pharmacy), which sells prescription and over-the-counter drugs, cosmetics, and other general merchandise to 4.5 million customers daily at over 9,900 locations in the US. Aside from CVS pharmacies, CVS Health owns Aetna and CVS Caremark.

The CVS Health network has 68,000 retail pharmacies, of which 41,000 are chain pharmacies that include CVS stores and 27,000 are independent pharmacies located throughout the US.  There are over 300,000 employees at CVS Health.

In March, CVS Health announced that it is hiring 50,000 people in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  You can check whether the roles of store associates, home delivery drivers, and distribution center employees, among others, have been filled, or browse through job vacancies on the website. If you are gearing up for your application at a CVS store near you, here are essential pointers for you.

Does CVS Drug-Test Employees?

CVS Health goes by a Code of Conduct, which states its commitment to having an alcohol-free and drug-free workplace. The company prohibits the unauthorized use, possession, sale, exchange, or purchase of drugs, illegal substances, and alcohol in its premises or while one is on company business.

Going to work while under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or any substance that can affect one’s performance of duties and other people’s safety is also a no-no. CVS Health does allow prescription drugs for as long as they don’t affect job performance.

Pre-employment Drug Testing

Here’s a look at the application process at CVS Health:

  • Apply: look up jobs by title, and hit Apply Now,found on the job listing.

  • Interview: recruiters may schedule you for a phone call or interview. If you progress to the next stage, you’ll be interviewed by the hiring manager.

  • Get hired: upon accepting the job offer, you need to pass a drug test and background check to get hired.

These steps illustrate the recruitment at CVS Health, which notes that the process for its retail jobs may be different.

Drug Testing during Employment

CVS is known to conduct drug tests to existing employees for promotion or getting hired for a new position. Another scenario is when the management suspects one to be working under the influence of drugs/alcohol, as noted above. Involvement in an accident while at work may also form the basis for a drug test.

The Answer

CVS is clear about what it expects from applicants or candidates who want to get hired. Testing clear of drugs to get employed is step one, and routine drug testing in the company is simply inevitable.
